GREAT LAKES SHIPPING GETS EVEN GREENER: Great Lakes Shipping Gets Even Greener: The U.S.-flag Great Lakes fleet further minimized its already small carbon footprint when the KAYE E. BARKER returned to service on August 9 powered by brand new, state-of-the-art diesel engines. This is the first steamship to be converted under the EPA’s Great Lakes Steamship Repower Incentive Program, which makes it possible to economically convert “steamers” to reduce their environmental impact. The new power plant will reduce CO2 by 39 percent, SOx by 48 percent and PM by 11 percent. The BARKER hauls iron ore, coal and limestone on the Great Lakes and is the fourth vessel Ohio-based Interlake Steamship Company has repowered at Bay Shipbuilding Company in Sturgeon Bay, Wisc., in the past six years. These repowerings represent a significant investment to better serve America’s manufacturing, power generation and construction industries.
